Indoor tanning has been revolutionized as of late with the introduction of the spray on tan. Increased knowledge about the long term damage and risk associated with exposure to UV rays has not slowed down the indoor tanning industry at all which sees an increase in market share almost annually. However, this new level of sun awareness has prompted a new alternative to be developed for the same effect without the risk.
Traditionally, indoor tanning has been done through the use of a tanning bed or booth which emits concentrated levels of UV light providing an even tan in an accelerated time frame. Potential consumers are educated about the possible risks associated with the use of sun beds for indoor tanning and indoor tanning service providers are mandated by state regulation regarding equipment strength and maximum exposure time for clients. Although these safeguards decrease some of the risks and educate consumers so they make informed decisions about their personal use of indoor tanning, it has not eliminated the potential danger altogether. For instance, prolonged or repeated exposure to UV rays will increase the risk of premature aging, skin cancer and possible eye damage. In the past, a consumer had to evaluate the risks and acknowledge them in order to benefit from the effects of indoor tanning. In other words, the only completely safe tan was no tan at all, indoor or out.
Since the advent of indoor tanning salons who offer a harmless sugar based dye to be applied to the skin, people have been able to sport a glowing bronze “tan” which will usually last one week without stepping foot into the sun. There are also different application choices available. Some salons offer the privacy of automated booths which disperse the “tan” onto the body or air brushed on by a trained technician to maximize evenness of coating. Dermatologists warn people about the necessity of still applying an SPF on a daily basis as a spray on tan does not offer sun protection, just merely mimics’ sun effect’s appearance. Finally, a safe alternative to indoor tanning is available and is becoming more popular in this day of increased health awareness.
